During the mid-1980s in the English countryside, middle-schooler Wil Proudfoot (Bill Milner) and his sister Jess (Tallulah Evans) are being raised by their mother Mary (Jessica Hynes) as members of the Brethren–a puritanical religious sect that forbids television, movies, music, and newspapers. One day, Will sees "Rambo: First Blood," and his imagination goes wild. He bonds with his classmate Lee Carter (Will Poulter), the class bully, who wants to enter a contest for aspiring filmmakers. Together, Will and Lee set out to make an action film, "Son of Rambow." Yes, the boys misspell "Rambo." Problems arise as they finish their film. A group of exchange students arrive in town, and French exchange student Didier Revol (Jules Sitruk) tries to hijack their film. Now, the friendship between Will and Lee is pushed to the breaking point.
