(The "letters" referred to in the title are those sent to his oldest son (Mike Farrell) expressing frustrations with his situation.)

Sally Field won the Oscar for Best Actress, and an Oscar was also won for Best Song ("It Goes Like It Goes"). The film was nominated for Best Picture.

Merchant Marine sailor Ray Hicks (Nick Nolte) delivers the drugs to John's wife Marge (Tuesday Weld) in California, but then thugs–Smitty and Danskin (Ray Sharkey and Richard Mazur)–steal the drugs. It isn't long before Ray and Marge are on the lam–with crooked narcotics agent Antheil (Anthony Zerbe) close behind.
