Dockworker Gerard (Gerard Depardieu) sets out to find the man who raped his sister and caused her to commit suicide. Gerard becomes obsessed with his quest, and the relationship with his girlfriend Bella (Victoria Abril) deteriorates. While searching the waterfront, Gerard meets wealthy Loretta (Nastassja Kinski) and becomes involved with her. A jealous Bella sends a pair of thugs out to teach Gerard a lesson. Gerard does find evidence leading to his sister's rapist, but, at the same time, he must decide whether he wants to spend his life with Bella or with Loretta.
