This story, set in the early 20th century, centers on Spanish dancer Martha (Leni Riefenstahl), the Marquis Don Sebastian (Bernhard Minetti), and simple shepherd Pedro (Franz Eichberger). Both the Marquis and Pedro are in love with Martha when Martha moves in with the Marquis. But, the Marquis has financial problems and solves his dilemma by marrying the wealthy Donna (Maria Koppenhofer). The Marquis arranges for Martha to marry Pedro but forbids them from consummating their marriage. The Marquis, of course, sneaks into the room at night to be with Martha. This film took 12 years to make because events of World War II caused delays in filming that took place in Germany.
