Katri Walenska (Anna Maria Alberghetti) is 15 years old when she swims ashore after jumping off her ship and illegally enters New York. She goes to Greenwich Village to find her parents' friend, Jan Poldi (Lauritz Melchior), and meets neighbor Terry Brennan (Rosemary Clooney). Terry is so impressed with Katri's singing voice that she and her friends try to hide Katri from immigration authorities while Terry tries to get her an audition.

Singer Bill Miller (Dean Martin) has problems accepting the fact that his success is largely based on the presence of his comic sidekick Theodore "Ted" Rogers (Jerry Lewis) who sits in the audience and cracks jokes while Bill sings on stage. When Bill finally dumps Ted from the act, complications ensue, and Bill learns that without Ted he cannot maintain his stardom. Now, Ted steps in, and Bill regains his popularity with Ted back in the audience cracking his jokes.
