In this tension-filled Western, Pat Brennan (Randolph Scott) is a rancher who loses his horse on a bet and now must get a ride on a stagecoach. Also on the stagecoach is a newly-wed couple, Willard and Doretta Mims (John Hubbard and Maureen O'Sullivan). When they reach an abandoned station, they fall into the hands of bandit Frank Usher (Richard Boone) and his henchmen Chink and Billy Jack (Henry Silva and Skip Homeier) who hold the passengers captive. Hoping to make a deal, cowardly Willard tells Usher that Doretta's father is wealthy. The ploy does not work for Frank, and Usher kills Frank but then holds Doretta for ransom. Tensions rise while Usher waits for the ransom, and, meanwhile, romance blooms between Pat and Doretta.
