  Boris Karloff plays Frankenstein's monster in this "father of horror films." It is the story of Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) who digs up new graves in search of body parts for his experiments in the creation of human life. Frankenstein does succeed, but the life he creates has a violent and murderous brain. When Frankenstein's fiancee Elizabeth (Mae Clarke) arrives at his laboratory with Victor (John Boles) and Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan), they find an eerie scene and a totally changed Frankenstein obsessed with the creation of his monster.

  During World War I, while taking cover under Waterloo Bridge during an air raid in London, chorus girl Myra (Mae Clarke) meets Canadian soldier Roy Cronin (Douglass Montgomery). Not realizing that Myra is a prostitute, Roy falls in love with her, and they make plans to be married–despite Myra's concerns about not admitting to Roy that she is a prostitute. Roy does find out about her past but still loves Myra. It is time for Roy to return to the battlefield, and they share a tearful farewell at Waterloo Bridge. Later, during another air raid, Myra is again near Waterloo Bridge but doesn't take cover and is killed.
