Tony agrees to star in the show but runs into problems when the "artistic" director Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchanan) hires prima ballerina Gabriella Gerard (Cyd Charisse) to star with Tony. Tony and Gabriella do not get along, and the show appears doomed until all involved decide that they must work together if the show is to be a hit on Broadway. Musical numbers include "Dancing in the Dark," "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan," and "Louisiana Hayride."    1 User Review

  Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, as Guy and Mimi, run into each other at a resort where Mimi is awaiting her divorce. Mimi mistakes Guy for the man (Erik Rhodes) who her aunt (Alice Brady) has hired to have a tryst with Mimi and, thus, provide the grounds for her divorce. Complications ensue when Guy is attracted to Mimi, but she, because of the mix-up, does not treat him well. By story's end, all ends happily. The dances to "The Continental" and "Night and Day" are delightfully performed in this film. "The Continental" won the Academy Award for Best Song, the first year that the award was given for this category. Nominations were also received for four other awards, including Best Picture.

Meanwhile, Aunt Roberta passes away, and John inherits the boutique and enters into a partnership with Aunt Roberta's assistant Stephanie (Irene Dunne). This is a very early Astaire/Rogers pairing, and it is worthwhile viewing.

By story's end, Penny escapes her own wedding to Ricky (Georges Metaxa), and "Lucky" and Penny are reunited. Jerome Kern wrote the score, which includes "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Never Gonna Dance." The first of these won the Oscar for Best Song. One of the pair's best.

  Architect Doug Roberts (Paul Newman) and builder James Duncan (William Holden) are hosting a party celebrating the construction of a 130-stories-tall office building and hotel in San Francisco. As the building erupts, the guests are trapped in the building, and their fates rely on Fire Chief O'Hallorhan (Steve McQueen) to stop the fire and save their lives. The special effects are spectacular in this disaster film. An Oscar for Best Song went to "We May Never Love Like This Again." In addition to two other Oscars (Best Cinematography and Film Editing), the film was nominated for four others, including Best Picture and Supporting Actor (Fred Astaire for his role of con man Harlee Claiborne attending the party).
