Earth is threatened by a solar flare-up, and scientists on a space station try to explode an anti-matter bomb, named Freddy, on the sun to save the people of Earth. The mission leader, Steve Kelso (Tim Matheson) commands the space vessel, but Arnold Teague (Peter Boyle) is plotting to sabotage the mission and places Alex Noffe (Annabel Schofield) on the space vessel to destroy Freddy. Meanwhile, Steve's father, Admiral "Skeet" Kelso (Charlton Heston), is searching the desert for his grandson Mike (Corin Nemec) who has crashed a plane while going AWOL from his military academy. Mike meets Travis (Jack Palance) in the desert, and they go to Teague's headquarters where Travis is killed and Mike is captured. The Admiral and his commandos raid the headquarters and rescue Mike. Meanwhile, Alex changes her mind, knocks out Kelso, and pilots Freddy into the sun and saves the world.
