Twenty years ago, Wes Holman (Bruce Dern) was banned from amateur long-distance racing, but now he re-enters the racing world as an "outlaw." In the process, Wes wants to prove something to his old coach (John Marley) and his father (Bill Bailey) who had played important roles in his past. The story follows Wes during his year of training and continues through his race over the Southern California mountains to the Pacific Ocean.
