While serving on a their Ironman I mission, American astronauts Buzz Lloyd (Gene Hackman, Jim Pruett (Richard Crenna), and Clayton Stone (James Franciscus) encounter major problems while returning home to Houston. In order to survive, they need oxygen, and NASA supervisor Charles Keith (Gregory Peck) tries unsuccessfully to find the solution. But, just when it looks like there is no chance for them, a Russian spaceship arrives on the scene to rescue them. This film won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects.
