Ray (Edward Norton) and his brother Frances, Jr. (Noah Emmerich) have followed in their father Francis Tierney, Sr.'s (Jon Voight) profession as police officers. Their brother-in-law Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) is also a policeman. During a bloody shoot-out between Hispanic drug dealers and the police, four policemen are killed. Now, Francis, Sr. talks Ray into investigating the case, and while Ray tracks down the killers, Jimmy, who is involved in a drug ring, desperately tries to cover his own tracks.
