Hawks trains his men and pretends to be a self-centered snob so that they will direct their frustrations at him instead of each other. MacDougall, however, sees what is going on and gives the sailors clues so that they will respect Hawks. The crew pulls together and manages to survive many Japanese attacks. Look fast for Clint Eastwood as a medic near the end of the film.

  Ray Milland won the Oscar for his portrayal of Don Birnam, writer and alcoholic. Ray Milland: "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. I can't take quiet desperation." This film also won the Best Picture Academy Award, as did Billy Wilder for his directing and writing.

Later her sister Betty (Jane Bryan) joins the group and is killed by a gangster for not submitting to his advances. Mary again threatens to testify but is beaten and scarred for life. Finally, from her hospital bed, she begs fellow prostitutes to testify. The five women–including Mary–appear in court, testify, and help bring Vanning to his knees.
