Leaving his agoraphobic wife, Katherine (Mary Steenburgen), at home, absent-minded professor Washington Bellamy (Ted Danson) hatches a plan to support son Andy's (Eric Schweig) interest in space: on the eve of Neil Armstrong's landing on the Moon, they will embark on a road trip that will take the same time as space travel from Earth to the Moon. Thus begins their symbolic adventure from California to Idaho. Meanwhile, Katherine senses that her family needs her and ventures from the security of home to join Washington and Andy.
