Years ago, Emile (Ian McKellen) abandoned his family, but now he is traveling back home to Canada to receive an honorary degree. As part of his journey, Emile visits his estranged niece, Nadia (Deborah Kara Unger), and her 10-year-old daughter, Maria (Theo Crane). Nadia has not forgiven him for leaving the family years before, but Emile does form a bond with Maria.
