An epidemic of blindness hits a city, and those afflicted are forced into an abandoned hospital by the authoritarian government. As time passes, a bartender (Gael Garcia Bernal) appoints himself "King of Ward Three" and assumes the role of a dictator. Now, primal instincts take over the blind residents of the hospital as their world spirals downward. Will their only seeing person be able to lead them to safety?

The movie consists of many episodes involving violence and murder among gang members and has been tagged as possibly the best crime film of the 21st century, to date. Fernando Meirelles received a Best Director Oscar nomination.

Based on John le Carre's novel, activist Tessa (Rachel Weisz) uncovers the fact that a pharmaceutical company is testing its drugs on African natives. She tries to expose the conspiracy and is killed. Her widower, British High Commission diplomat Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), takes on the investigation in pursuit of not only Tessa's murderer but the possibility of Tessa's unfaithfulness to him as well. Weisz won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and the film received three additional nominations.
