Simon Dermott (Peter O'Toole) is hired by Nicole (Audrey Hepburn) to steal a fake statue that her father, Bonnet (Hugh Griffith) had inadvertently donated to a museum before it is discovered that he is an art forger. Nicole believes that Simon is a burglar, but he is really a detective, and, entranced by Nicole who is engaged to American art collector Davis Leland (Eli Wallach), he agrees. The statue is stolen, and Simon gives it to Davis with instructions to leave Nicole and take the statue home. Davis agrees, and Nicole and Simon now have each other.

Set in Vienna during the early 1900s, this story is narrated by Anton Walbrook who introduces a series of affairs in which a new character is involved with a character from the last scene. Beginning with young soldier Franz (Serge Reggiani) falling into the arms of prostitute Leocadie (Simone Signoret) who then has a short liaison with Alfred (Daniel Gelin), but he leaves her when he seduces housewife Emma Breitkopf (Danielle Darrieux). And on it goes until the seductions go full circle, and Franz is back with Leocadie.
