After the wall goes up in 1961 to separate East and West Berlin, East German swim champion Harry Melchior (Heino Ferch) makes use of a forged passport and escapes to the West. However, his sister, Lotte Lohmann (Alexandra Maria Lara), remains in East Berlin, and Harry is determined to get her out. His solution: dig a simple tunnel under the wall. But, the project grows to an enormous tunnel to accommodate many others who want to escape the East German regime. Based on a true story.
