Middle-class, Oxford student Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) is invited to visit the aristocratic, grand estate, Brideshead. The invitation comes from his aristocratic friend Sebastian (Ben Whishaw) who has fallen love with Charles and wants him to visit his home. But, the visit is called short when Sebastian learns that his domineering, Catholic mother, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson), is returning, and he is sure that she will disapprove of Charles' atheism. Later, Charles receives a cable from Sebastian who has hurt his foot and needs care. He invites Charles back to revisit Brideshead. This time, Charles meets and falls in love with Sebastian's sister Julia (Hayley Atwell), an emotional triangle develops, and Charles cannot resist his infatuation with Brideshead.

Along the way, Charlotte steps in and plots to separate Lea and Cheri by arranging a match between Cheri and 18-year-old Edmee (Felicity Jones).
