Years ago, Louis (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd (Bernie Mac) were the backup group of soul singers for singing legend Marcus Hooks (John Legend). But, when Hooks opted to go his separate way, the group split and haven't seen or spoken to each other in 20 years. Meanwhile, Hooks won 19 Emmys while Floyd and Louis faded into obscurity. When Hooks dies, a televised tribute at the Apollo Theater is planned, and Floyd convinces down-on-his-luck Louis to join him in his lime-green Cadillac on a cross-country trip to pay their respects to Marcus. Louis agrees to go but makes the road trip as difficult as possible, and lingering problems from the past reemerge.
