Eric Hartman (John Ireland) is directing a film depicting the deaths when the caretaker of the house, Edgar Price (John Carradine), claims that the way it is being filmed does not truly reflect what happened. The star (Faith Domergue) of the film reads a passage from the occult book, "Tibetan Book of the Dead" and, unwittingly, calls back a ghost that starts killing off the film crew, one-by-one.

It escapes from Pete Mathews' (Kenneth Tobey) nuclear submarine and heads for San Francisco while the submarine captain and a pair of scientists tries to figure out how to deal with it. But before they can take care of the monster, it wrecks the Golden Gate Bridge as well as other San Francisco landmarks. As usual, special effects innovator Ray Harryhausen's scenes are excellent for the time.

Set during 2020, this sci-fi story features a futuristic trip to Venus by spaceships Vega, Sirius, and Capella. Before they reach Venus, an asteroid collides with Capella, but Vega and Sirius continue on. While orbiting Venus, Vega sends Dr. Kern (Georgi Tejkh), Allen Sherman (Yuri Sarantsev), and the robot John (John Bix) down to the planet. Once on Venus, they lose communication with Professor Hartman (Basil Rathbone) and cosmonaut Marsha Evans (Faith Domergue) who have remained behind on Vega. Sirius does land on Venus, and Commander Lockhart, Andre Ferneau, and Hans Walter (Vladimir Yemelyan, Gennadi Vernov, and Georgi Zhzhyonov) set out to find Kern and Sherman while trying to exist in the mayhem provided by wild beasts and an erupting volcano. From evidence found on Venus, the cosmonauts conclude that human beings had lived on Venus but destroyed themselves through nuclear warfare.
