While attending a cocktail party, CIA operative Ray Koval (Clive Owen) and MI6 agent Claire Stenwick (Julia Roberts) are attracted to each other and begin a love affair. Later, they both quit their jobs and enter the world of corporate espionage as each sets out to secure a product's formula that will bring a fortune to the corporation that patents it first. Ray and Claire now find themselves on opposite sides of the corporate warfare between rivals Dick Garsil (Paul Giamatti) and Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) who will use any means necessary to get the patent rights.
