| | A very skilled, very deliberate presentation | 1fatts 03/07/2007 | Critics were divided on this one, and it seems to have come down to whether they "got it" or not. I got it. I frankly have trouble understanding how a professional movie reviewer could have missed it.
The construction is thoughtful and very well executed. People seem to be not exactly where they should be; time moves too quickly and then too slowly; voices are heard at the wrong time and the wrong place; the confusion encompasses not just the characters, but the camera, the weather, the flow of time.
It is all wonderfully arresting, and I think it all comes together beautifully just when it should.
Well worth watching. Make up your own mind. |

Sweet Land 2005 PG, 110 min. Genre: Drama / Romance
Director: Ali Selim Cast: Elizabeth Reaser, Tim Guinee, Alan Cumming, John Heard, Alex Kingston, Ned Beatty, Lois Smith, Tom Gilroy, Patrick Heusinger, Paul Sand, Jodie Markell, Sage Kermes, Kirsten Frantzich, Stephen Yoakam, Karen Landry
"Sweet Land" begins with elderly Inge (Lois Smith) burying her husband, Olaf (Tim Guinee), in Minnesota's farm country. She relates the story of her past when, as a young German, Inge (Elizabeth Reaser) arrived in Minnesota during 1920 as a mail-order bride for Olaf. There were major problems with the planned marriage: Inge was German and a socialist, and Norwegian/American Olaf and his Norwegian farming neighbors had problems accepting a woman from the country with which America had just fought a war. Even the Lutheran Minister Sorrensen (John Heard) refused to marry them. These and other trials and tribulations of immigration rise to the fore, but as time passes the love story of Inge and Olaf ends happily. 1 User Review

| | Movie Maniac 03/28/2012 | | Great movie - shows what some immigrants went through coming to America, the hardships, true friendship, enduring love and devotion, and the prejudice and bigotry displayed by others not far removed from immigrant ancestors. Amazing how the bigotry and prejudice filled the church. |
