Richard (John Marley) and Maria (Lynn Carlin) have been married for 14 years but are growing apart, neither one being content with his/her life. While Richard visits young prostitute Jeannie Rapp(Gena Rowlands), Maria meets a younger man, Chet (Seymour Cassel), in a bar and takes him to bed. But, their extramarital affairs do not satisfy either one. Carlin and Cassel received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Actor.

She then meets Moskowitz (Seymour Cassel), a parking lot attendant who rescues her from an angry date. A love affair between opposites follows in this enjoyable film.
