  Richard (John Marley) and Maria (Lynn Carlin) have been married for 14 years but are growing apart, neither one being content with his/her life. While Richard visits young prostitute Jeannie Rapp(Gena Rowlands), Maria meets a younger man, Chet (Seymour Cassel), in a bar and takes him to bed. But, their extramarital affairs do not satisfy either one. Carlin and Cassel received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Actor.

  Divorced, proper, well-educated Minnie (Gena Rowlands) is having an affair with an abusive married man. After he stops the relationship with her when his wife threatens suicide, Minnie tries the blind-date route that turns out badly. She then meets Moskowitz (Seymour Cassel), a parking lot attendant who rescues her from an angry date. A love affair between opposites follows in this enjoyable film.
