Soon after he arrives, Carter becomes involved with the Hardwicke family–mother Sarah (Meg Ryan) who has discovered a lump in her breast, and her two daughters, teenager Lucy (Kristen Stewart) and younger sister Paige (Makenzie Vega). The Hardwickes live just across the street from Phyllis, and Carter makes himself available listening to their problems, giving good advice, and even learning something about himself in the process.

  This six-part screenplay, based on a true story, takes place in Paris, Spain, Mallorca, and London during a period from 1946 to 1972. The plot follows the lives of Barbara Baekeland (Julianne Moore) and her son Tony (Barney Clarke as a child and Eddie Redmayne as an adult). Tony's father, Brooks (Stephen Dillane), thinks that his son is a failure, but over the years Barbara and Tony grow close–in fact, they even become lovers who sleep not only with each other but with bisexual Sam (Hugh Dancy) as well. The disintegration of the Baekeland family continues with disastrous results.
