This story is told from the perspectives of actress Gloria Lorrison (Lana Turner), writer James Lee Bartlow (Dick Powell), and director Fred Amiel (Barry Sullivan) who go to a movie studio to listen to a pitch from producer Jonathan Shields (Kirk Douglas) whose studio is troubled financially. Shields wants them to work on a new project, but all three have had bad experiences in the past with Shields that will make them think twice about signing with him. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Gloria Grahame for her role as Rosemary Bartlow), and Kirk Douglas received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
