In this made-for-British-TV film, the Pollack family–Frank (Jeff Robert), Mavis (Pam Ferris), and their sons Mark (Phil Daniels) and Colin (Tim Roth)–live in a run-down flat in London's East End. Frank is unemployed as are his sons–until Mavis' sister Barbara (Marion Bailey) offers Colin a job wallpapering her home. Mark is jealous of the offer and tries to talk Colin out of taking the job–and problems continue as other family members also manipulate each other.

Wealthy and newly widowed Lilia Herriton (Helen Mirren) goes on holiday in Italy with her younger companion, Caroline (Helena Bonham Carter). In Italy, Lilia meets and marries the very unsuitable Gino Carella (Giovanni Guidelli). The marriage causes a clash between her deceased husband's family and Lilia. Matters worsen when Lilia becomes pregnant and dies in childbirth–leaving the Herriton family (Rupert Graves and Judy Davis) determined to take custody of the baby.
