Years after Jewish business executive Walter Whitney's (George Segal) affair with an African-American woman, their 17-year-old son, Roger (Denzel Washington), comes knocking on the door. With his change in lifestyle, Walter begins to understand the obstacles of prejudice that Roger endures. This comedy attempts to blend humor with racial prejudice.

The popular title song is not the only good thing about this movie. Comedy reigns in this story about the lack of fairness in the workplace when secretaries–Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), Violet Newstead (Lily Tomlin), and Doralee Rhodes (Dolly Parton)–kidnap their lecherous boss Franklin Hart, Jr. (Dabney Coleman). They keep Franklin prisoner in his own home, run the department without him, and make changes that lead to greater production. But, how long can they keep Hart captive?
