Edward G. Robinson plays John Ingram who, although innocent, is sent to prison. Ingram escapes and heads for Oklahoma where he starts a new business fighting oil fires and marries Helen (Ruth Hussey). All goes well–until William Ramey appears on the scene, blackmails Ingram, takes over the business, and sends him back to prison. But, Ingram again escapes and, this time, gets a confession from Ramey.
