Other tales involve Charlton Heston and Betty Hutton, whose egos must be overcome to attain love. Look for Bing Crosby and Bob Hope as spectators in the grandstand. The film was also won an Academy Award for Best Writing and was nominated for three others, including Best Director.

Stoddard was left for dead, but Doniphon found him, took him to Shinbone, and helped him find a job. Later, Valance challenged Stoddard to a gun fight, which ended with Valance dead. By story's end, it is learned that it is Doniphon, not Stoddard, who killed Liberty Valance. But when asked if the truth will be published, the reporter replies, "This is the West, sir. Set in Kansas City during Prohibition, this film recreates the jazz age and all the elements that made up the Roaring 20s. World War I veteran Pete Kelly (Jack Webb) plays his trumpet and performs with his jazz band while romancing socialite Ivy Conrad (Janet Leigh). But, life is not easy in the days of Prohibition, and Pete endures frequent confrontations with mob boss Fran McCarg (Edmond O'Brien)–culminating in a shootout at the nightclub. The music makes this film well worth watching, and the many songs include Ella Fitzgerald performing "Hard-Hearted Hannah" and Peggy Lee singing "He Needs Me." Lee received an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her role of mob mistress Rose Hopkins.

But, they leave clues behind, and Cody ends up in jail on a trumped up charge. Now, the feds send an undercover agent Hank Fallon, a.k.a. "Vic" (Edmund O'Brien), to the jail. He befriends Cody and infiltrates Cody's gang. Cody's mother is killed, Cody breaks out of jail with "Vic," and reunites with his gang for a chase scene through a chemical factory ending with Cody crying out to his deceased mother.
