Brainy eleven-year-old Akeelah (Keke Palmer) is far from winning any academic awards at Crenshaw Middle School in South Los Angeles–until Principal Welch (Curtis Armstrong) convinces his friend, Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), to coach Akeelah to compete in the district spelling competition. After a rough start, Akeelah decides to study and excels through her efforts that lead her to winning the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
