  Bill Reardon (Pierre Watkin) has willed his family's steel mill to either "Tons" Walker (Grant Withers) or to his playboy son, Bill Jr. (Ranny Weeks), with the provision that "Tons" will work with Bill Jr. for one year and convince him to change his ways. Professional as well as personal entanglements ensue, but when each becomes involved with each others' girlfriends (Beatrice Roberts and Judith Allen), antagonisms reach new heights, and lessons are learned by both "Tons" and Bill.

  In this film, based on George Barr McCutcheon's novel, a World War II veteran Monty Brewster (Dennis O'Keefe) arrives home and learns that he has inherited one million dollars–the catch is he must spend it all within two months or he will not receive the rest of his inheritance. Another stipulation is that he cannot tell anyone about the inheritance. Brewster goes on a spending spree putting his money into bad investments, all of which turn into surprising profits. In the midst of his frenzy to spend the money, personal problems arise when he must postpone his wedding to Peggy (Helen Walker) but cannot tell her why. Hinds) who is into explosives, their would-be ballet dancer daughter Essie (Ann Miller), and her husband Ed (Dub Taylor) who is addicted to his xylophone–"entertain" Tony's aristocratic parents (Edward Arnold and Mary Forbes) in their decaying home. Complications arise with future in-laws' acceptance of each others' families–especially when Tony's parents show up one day early. The film received the Oscar for Best Picture. An Academy Award was also won by Frank Capra as Best Director, and the film received five other nominations, including Spring Byington for Best Supporting Actress.
