  After Alsatian innkeeper Mathias (Lionel Barrymore) murders a wealthy visitor at his inn and takes his gold, Mathias' conscience takes over, and he finds himself on the verge of insanity. The pressures become even worse for Mathias when the victim's brother Jerome (Gustav von Seyffertitz) arrives on the scene with a mesmerist (Boris Karloff) who says that he can identify the murderer.

An American seaman is washed ashore, Angela takes him in, and they fall in love. The sailor turns out to be a German spy, and now Angela must deal with the consequences in this heavy drama. The story was written and directed by Pickford's friend (Frances Marion), who got the story from a woman's account of her experiences in World War I.
