Special effects are outstanding in this sci-fi story about what happens when an invention that sends sensory inputs into the brain ends up in the wrong hands. Scientists Lillian Reynolds and Michael Brace (Louise Fletcher and Christopher Walken) have been experimenting with their invention that can record sights, sounds, and feelings after the brain receives sensory messages. Michael uses the invention to get closer to his estranged wife Karen (Natalie Wood), and others begin to abuse it. Representing the government, Alex Terson (Cliff Robertson) steps in to take over the project. Problems ensue, and, after one worker tapes the experience of his own death, Michael is determined to play back the tape to honor his memory. 2 User Reviews

| | 03/04/2011 | | I was at the edge of my seat when I first watched this movie. Really caught my interest. Even though back then it was considered a fantasy, I think in the near future a virtual reality! Did not like the potential of using this device for interogation or torture. But did like the enjoyable pleasant and fun things this helmet device provided. Well written and produced movie. Still remember this movie vividly almost 30 years later. |

Silent Running 1971 G, 89 min. Genre: Sci-Fi / Drama / Adventure
Director: Douglas Trumbull Cast: Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts, Ron Rifkin, Jesse Vint, Mark Persons, Steve Brown, Cheryl Sparks, Joseph Campanella, Roy Engel, Larry Whisenhunt
Special effects are worth the price of admission for this film in which Bruce Dern plays Freeman Lowell, the leader of a group of space scientists, whose spaceship is the greenhouse supply for Earth's last vegetation. When Lowell is ordered to destroy the greenhouse, he tries to get his colleagues to help him save the green house, but they refuse. Now, Lowell believes that he has no other choice than to kill them. Joan Baez sings the environmental songs. 1 User Review

| | well ahead of its time | keel 05/30/2012 | | Young actors still learning their skills but still well enough done to enjoy their work. Environmental flic from the '70's, made for under 1.3 million. That budget is apparent within the film but the skills the crew used in designing and building the sets and the spfx under that limitation are brilliant. This is a heartwarming but relevant film warning of the dangers of the exploitation of earth's resources. What makes this film work are the drones - Huey, Dewey and Louie, that lend an air of futuristic science to the movie yet give Bruce Dern a vehicle to play off and against. They are both amusing and yet emotional. I enjoy this movie every time I watch it. |
