While his wife Grace ((voice of Katie Honaker) has been fighting in Iraq, Stanley (John Cusack) has been tending to their daughters–eight-year-old Dawn (Gracie Bednarczyk) and 12-year-old Heidi (Shelan O'Keefe)–at their home in Minnesota. One day, an Army captain (Doug Dearth) and a chaplain (Doug James) appear at the door to tell Stanley that Grace has died. As his method of putting off telling his daughters the news about their mother, Stanley takes the girls to a Florida amusement park. On the long car trip south, Stanley and the girls become closer despite the fact that Stanley knows that the time is coming when he must tell the girls about their mother.
