A CIA chief, Ross (Charles Durning), struggles for control, and rival chief Cooper (Dabney Coleman) stands in his way. Ross devises a scheme in which he randomly picks out a man with one red shoe, concert violinist Richard (Tom Hanks), and tells Cooper that the man is suspected of being a super-agent and that Cooper should keep a close eye on him. Cooper brings in Maddy (Lori Singer) to seduce Richard, and Richard falls in love with her–all of which leads to even more complications.

This is a delightful tale about a love triangle. Sally Field is a determined divorcee who is trying to make a living with her children. She meets the town's pharmacist (James Garner) and just when romance seems to blossom, her ex-husband (Brian Kerwin) appears back in the picture. Field and Garner make a charming couple in this movie and Garner received and Oscar nomination.

Then, a friend from her childhood, Nick Kazlik (James Olson), appears on the scene, and romance blooms. Rachel thinks that she is pregnant, but it turns out not to be so. But, as a result of her experiences, Rachel changes her outlook and sets out to begin living a meaningful life. This film marks Paul Newman's directorial debut. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Actress (Woodward), Supporting Actress (Parsons) and Writing.
