  Following his colleague's suicide, homicide detective Dave Bannion (Glenn Ford) investigates possible mob influence from within the city's police force. When a car bomb, meant for him, kills Bannion's wife Katie (Jocelyn Brando), he is taken off the case. Now, with help from Debbie (Gloria Grahame) who is the ex-mistress of gang leader Vince Stone (Lee Marvin), Bannion seeks revenge.

  Bootlegger Larry Maddux (Paul Newman) discovers Helen Morgan (Ann Blyth) while she is performing in a carnival and helps her rise to stardom on Broadway. But, Larry is using Helen for his own good, and Helen is torn between Larry and married lawyer Russell Wade (Richard Carlson). Helen turns to alcohol and, after the Stock Market crash in 1929, ends up in Bellevue Hospital. But, Helen rises above her problems and regains her stardom. Songs include "Sunny Side of the Street" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." (sung by Gogi Grant).

  Col. Flanders (Don Ameche) must deal with citizens of a small town who are unhappy about the Army missile base located nearby. Meanwhile, a soldier, Shannon Gambroni (Tony Curtis), has fallen for bar maid Ramona (Suzanne Pleshette) who town Sheriff Harve (Ernest Borgnine) considers his property. Harve has Shannon arrested, and Shannon's soldier friends, headed by Michael M. Nace (Brian Keith), take matters into their own hands and use a World War II tank to rescue Shannon.

After the animals are rounded up, improvement in zoo conditions follows.
