While waiting for his delayed flight from O'Hare, Buddy Amaral (Ben Affleck) meets fellow travelers in the bar and gives his plane ticket to Greg (Tony Goldwyn), who is very anxious to get home. The plane crashes, and Buddy, shocked that he has had such a close call with death, turns to the bottle for a year before deciding to meet Greg's widow, Abby (Gwyneth Paltrow). But Buddy doesn't explain who he is, and complications result just as romance blossoms.
