Flint Mitchell (Clark Gable) is a 19th-century fur trapper who marries the Blackfoot Indian chief's daughter Kamiah (Maria Elena Marques). His plot is to use their marriage to allow him to search for beaver pelts inside Indian territory. But, Flint falls in love with Kamiah, and they have a child. Later, Kamiah is killed by attacking Indians, and, although he considers abandoning his child, Flint stays in the mountains with his Indian friends and takes over his role as father.
