Meanwhile, Bugs falls in love with socialite Polly Cass (Helen Vinson) and asks her to marry him. But, Polly, without Bugs' knowledge, continues her affair with John Staley (Kenneth Thomson), and her family swindles Bugs out of his ill-gotten fortune. When Ruth, who has fallen in love with Bugs, finally tells Bugs about Polly's family's activities, Bugs calls in the mob to help him out.

  This is the Booth Tarkington's story of the wealthy Amberson family's fall from the heights of society and the impact it inflicts on its members in the late 19th century. He left as a struggling inventor when Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello) turned down his marriage proposal to marry the "more acceptable" Wilbur Minafer (Don Dillaway). Eugene is now a widower with a daughter Lucy (Anne Baxter) and the successful inventor of an automobile. Isabel has been widowed, and Eugene again pursues her. But her son George (Tim Holt) and Aunt Fanny Amberson (Agnes Moorehead) interfere, and their actions bring on tragedy for the family when they do not accept progress in the changing world of the automobile age. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Supporting Actress (Agnes Moorehead).
