  After a stranger is lynched for cheating at cards, members of the lynching party become victims of a succession of unsolved murders. Van Morgan (Dean Martin), who had witnessed the hanging and tried to stop the lynching, sets out with hail-and-brimstone minister, Rev. Jonathan Rudd (Robert Mitchum), to find the murderer. Is the murderer closer than Morgan imagines?
