While on the sternwheel river boat Vicksburg, gunrunners Cash Adams (Alan Ladd) and his rival Clay Pike (Lloyd Nolan) join forces to supply arms to Cubans during the Spanish American War. Also on board is Dona Isabella (Rossana Podesta) who has been raising funds for the Cuban rebellion. The ship docks, and they unload the cargo and prepare to board wagons to continue their trip. Problems ensue, and Cash, who has fallen in love with Isabella, kills Pike in a deadly confrontation and continues the job of taking the arms to the Cubans.
