  Cal (John Lynch), a young Catholic in Northern Ireland, falls in love with the widowed Marcella (Helen Mirren) whose Protestant husband was killed by the IRA–a crime in which Cal reluctantly played a role. Now, as Cal becomes more interested in Marcella, she becomes attracted to him. But, Cal cannot bring himself to share with Marcella his role in her husband's murder. Can their love survive with the terrible secret being kept from Miranda? Mirren won the 1984 Cannes Best Actress award.

  This is John Huston's final film effort–he died before it was released. One of Huston's best films, this is the adaptation of a James Joyce short story about the reminiscences of a group of friends attending a party. Spinsters Aunt Kate (Helena Carroll) and Aunt Julia (Cathleen Delany) live in Dublin and are giving a New Year's Eve party in 1904. A young couple, Gabriel and Gretta Conroy (Donal McCann and Anjelica Huston), are enjoying the party until Gretta is prodded by Kate and Julia to remember her long-lost lover. As secrets from Greta's past are revealed, Gabriel begins to question the lack of passion in his own life.

Of course, it turns out that the castle really is haunted, and American tourists, including Jack and Sharon (Steve Guttenberg and Beverly D'Angelo), arrive for a visit. The fun really begins when Jack and Sharon become romantically interested in the real ghosts Mary and Martin (Daryl Hannah and Liam Neeson).
