He left as a struggling inventor when Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello) turned down his marriage proposal to marry the "more acceptable" Wilbur Minafer (Don Dillaway). Eugene is now a widower with a daughter Lucy (Anne Baxter) and the successful inventor of an automobile. Isabel has been widowed, and Eugene again pursues her. But her son George (Tim Holt) and Aunt Fanny Amberson (Agnes Moorehead) interfere, and their actions bring on tragedy for the family when they do not accept progress in the changing world of the automobile age. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Supporting Actress (Agnes Moorehead).
