Set in the 18th century, this is Marie Louise de la Ramee's children's story about an orphan, Nello (Jesse James), living with his beloved dog and grandfather, Jehan Daas (Jack Warden). Nello dreams of becoming an artist, and he gets encouragement from his best friend Aloise (Madylin Sweeten) and from a famous artist Michel La Grande (Jon Voight). Years later, Nello (now played by Jeremy James Kissner) enters an art competition, which he loses. Nello is upset and leaves home on a difficult journey that will help him understand the values of life.
