  "Godzilla" was so popular that it made sense to bring out new monsters. Thus, Gamera was born, and this film is the first of a series, which was revived in the mid-1990s. A nuclear blast in the Arctic awakens Gamera–a giant, flying, fire-breathing monster. Gamera proceeds to wreak havoc on Tokyo and other assorted areas until a plan is developed that is successful in sending Gamera rocketing to Mars.

At times beautiful and inventive and at times a drag, but in any event it will hit each viewer differently.

As luck would have it, there is a third member, Maerose Prizzi (Angelica Huston), making up this triangle, and she has devious plans for the other two. Angelica Huston won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. There were seven other nominations including Best Picture, Actor (Nicholson), Director, and Supporting Actor (William Hickey).
