In the process, Swamp Thing avenges himself for his condition that Arcane imposed on him years before.

Based on the comic book character, this is the story of Doctor Alec Holland's (Ray Wise) strange odyssey during which he turns himself into the slimy title character. Holland is trying to save the world from hunger by combining plant and animal cells. His lab is being protected by government agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau), but criminal mastermind Arcane (Louis Jourdan) breaks into the lab, kills Holland's sister Dr. Linda Holland (Nannette Brown) who works with him, and the formula spills on Holland. During the confusion, Alice escapes with Arcane in pursuit, and she is rescued by a green man who is actually Holland transformed by his formula into the Swamp Thing (Dick Durock).
