The generation gap of the Crompton family in Lancashire is presented through the eyes of both parents and children when young Hilda (Susan George) refuses to eat her herring and her father Rafe (James Mason) becomes irate. Because of Hilda's behavior, Rafe begins to serve her herring every day at tea time. Rafe's wife Daisy (Diana Coupland) is so upset with his behavior that she tries to get money for Hilda to move away to London. Rafe is also upset when his daughter Florence (Hannah Gordon) falls in love. And the problems continue as Rafe is determined to rule his household.
