It is 1941, and young Germans are attending an exclusive school in order to train as future leaders of the Third Reich. Despite his anti-Nazi father's objections, talented boxer Friedrich Weimer (Max Riemelt) makes it into the school. Once there, he befriends Albrecht Stein (Tom Schilling) who questions the actions of his own father, the Nazi military governor of the area, and gives Friedrich his first glimpse of what is going on in Germany. When he is put in a concentration camp, his talents are noted, and he becomes a key contributor to the counterfeiting program. But team member Adolf (August Diehl) is attempting to undermine the operation. Thus begins the dilemma of choosing between helping the enemy–the Nazis–vs. the consequences of potentially losing their lives. An Academy Award was received for Best Foreign Language Film.
