  Bernard Bottle (Alan Cumming) is having a bad day, and even loses his job as an art dealer, when he rubs a tarnished lamp and releases a 2,000-year-old genie, Josephus (Lenny Henry). The two become friends. It is Christmas, and Josephus can give Bernard anything he wishes. Troubles arise when Bernard wishes for the "Mona Lisa," and the police think that he stole it, but Josephus' magic powers take care of the problem.

She finds that it is difficult for a middle-class woman to fit into the social world that she now inhabits. Even the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Diana Rigg, in an Emmy-winning performance), who admired Rebecca, makes her life miserable. But even bigger problems lie ahead.
